SignMate

SignMate is an accessibility tool that connects people by bridging speech–sign barriers. It is a compact pipeline that turns live or recorded speech into real-time on-screen sign language (ASL), with automatic fingerspelling as a clear fallback for unknown words. The technical challenge involves achieving sub-second latency on modest hardware with smooth clip blending. Demos show the signing avatar reacting first to recorded clips, then to the live mic, promoting equality and visible access.
Key Features:
Live Translation Pipeline: Converts speech to ASL gloss and avatar animation in real-time.
Incremental Signing: Starts signing mid-sentence to minimize perceived latency.
Fingerspelling Fallback: Handles out-of-vocabulary (OOV) words reliably.
Accessibility Focus: Promotes equality by making spoken content visibly accessible in environments like meetings and classrooms.
Conclusion: SignMate is designed to serve a ready-to-use niche, delivering a tangible benefit by making communication accessible by default, even on modest, dedicated hardware like a mini-PC kiosk.
